X Minus One was a science fiction radio series on NBC that aired April 1955 through January 1958. The show featured stories written by some of the big names in 1950’s science fiction like Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, and Issac Asimov.

Some nutjob walked into the Discovery Channel building in Maryland with a handgun and what appeared to be an explosive device. He was demanding that Discovery have more programming telling people to stop having kids to save the planet. He was apparently inspired by Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and some book about a telepathic Ape. Does this mean Al Gore is provoking violence?
Pat Quinn has come out against Jody Weis’ meeting with gang leaders. He thinks that the better options is just to get guns off the street. I think he’s just mad that he wasn’t invited to the party too.

I can certainly understand the point of view that a university should allow it, but we’re really going to force a state university to pay for it?

An attorney is suing Lee County, FL for its ordinance banning guns at parks, beaches, and museums. He says that the state’s concealed-carry law allows those with permits to carry guns pretty much wherever they want. Do you really need to take a gun to a museum? Just because you can carry a gun with you, it doesn’t mean you should.
For the love of all things holy, watch what you post online. Washington Post sports columnist Mike Wise decided to start a rumor on Twitter that Ben Roethlisberger would get a five game suspension. It spread like wild fire, so Wise proved his point about how misinformation can spread on the internet. Now he’ll be suspended for a month.

An organization in St. Louis is offering parents $300 per child to enroll in one of the local schools. The school had been losing students to area private and charter schools. Would you sell your kids off to a lesser school for a few hundred semolians?
While President Obama was on one of his copious vacations workers were giving the Oval Office a makeover. Some conservative talking heads are criticizing Obama for wasting tax dollars on redecorating the joint, but it’s worth pointing out that Bush did the very same thing. As a matter of fact, most Presidents have. It just so happened that Obama liked the carpeting when he moved in, so he kept it. It’s his prerogative, and I believe they budget for that anyway.
Father of the Year Nominee: A Downers Grove man left his 5-month-old boy alone in a car while he shopped for iPod accessories. Clearly the guy just really needed one of those cases to keep his iPhone 4 from hanging up.

A Schaumburg man getting kicked out of his house has decided to take to living in tent in his front yard. He’s asked the city to settle the matter with a jury trial. The city says he’s a health threat, and the bank says that he’s a deadbeat… in his defense says that if he throws anything away, the aliens running the government will be able to read his thoughts.
Somewhere between 300-5oo,000 people showed up for Glenn Beck’s “Restore Rally” in Washington, DC. Amazingly there were no people dressed in sheets or pointy hats, but that didn’t stop Al Sharpton from saying that Beck was trying “hijack the civil rights movement.”
Good news: Someone tear-gassed those nutjobs from the Westboro Baptist Church. They were protesting the funeral of a Marine killed in Afghanistan. Of course the bad news is that some of the tear gas also hit some of the mourners.
Bias? President Obama and other Democratic Party candidates got 88% of political contributions from employees of ABC, CBS and NBC.
Awesome yet sad story of the day: An amateur ghost hunter who was on the look out for a ghost train was struck and killed by a real train.
For the first time in months there’s some good news for Mark Kirk. The NRSC will be able to spend $3.4 million on his Senate race. Ordinarily they would be limited to $1.7 million, but since there will basically be two elections, they can spend double. I wonder if the Democrats would be willing to keep pace on spending to hold onto the seat, or if Alexi will be on his own.
Another sign of the economy apocalypse: Goodwill has become one of America’s fastest-growing retail chains. I hope everyone remembers to wash anything they buy before they wear it… as a matter of fact, wash it a couple of times.

Moment of Racial Insensitivity: A Florida Winn-Dixie grocery story is apologizing for displaying a Confederate flag cake among its other “special occasion” cakes. The secret ingredient was rebellion.
A Pennsylvania high school printed a bunch of inspirational quotes in their yearbook. One of them read “And in the last analysis, success is what matters.” Sounds like the sort of generic stuff you’d read in a yearbook right? There’s only one problem, that quote came from Adolph Hitler. As you might imagine, school officials are apologizing.
A conservative group has been banned from holding a rally at Illinois’s Old State Capitol because the site prohibits political demonstrations — yet it’s the same place where President Obama announced his run for president and later, his choice of Joe Biden.
Judge James Zagel says that Rod Blagojevich’s retrial will likely be in January.So I guess that means it probably won’t be on many front pages during the midterm elections.
Speaking of the midterms, Mark Kirk and Alexi Giannoulias have agreed to at least two debates and possibly more.

Remember Victory Gardens in WWII? Well of course you don’t, you weren’t alive in WWII. Nonetheless, a Northbrook woman decided that she wanted to plant a vegetable garden in her front yard. It’s green… it’s foliage… it serves a useful purpose. Good idea, right? Wrong. One of her neighbors complained about it, so the village’s director of community planning is forcing her to get rid of it. Should the village really have any say about what you do on your own property? They can have my cucumbers when they pry them from my cold, dead hands!
A teacher in Australia decided that it was a good idea to ask their students to devise a terrorist attack. The assignment was to plan a terrorist attack “to kill the MOST innocent civilians in order to get your message across.” GET YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS???
A new study says that teenagers are addicted to text messaging. Statistics show 80 percent of all 15 to 18-year-olds own a cell phone. And the rate of texting has sky rocketed 600 percent in three years. The average teen sends 3,000 texts a month. That’s 100 messages a day! How can anyone send 100 messages per day?
