Obligatory Star Trek trailer post

Blogging will begin again tomorrow, after a short rest for my Space Shuttle launch excursion (Video of that will be up tonight or tomorrow). But for now take a gander at the trailer for the new Star Trek movie. It was released with the new James Bond flick, but just hit the net officially today.

Some like the looks of it, others think it looks like 90210 in space. I for one am very excited about it though.

The Final Frontier

Paramount has released the first batch of set photo’s from the new “reboot” of Star Trek. It was originally supposed to come out in December, but the folks at Paramount realized that they had nothing for the summer of 2009, so despite the fact that it’ll be done in time for Christmas, it won’t be released until May. Rumor has it, it will be worth the wait though. You can see all of the pics at Ain’t it Cool News. There are a couple of views of the Enterprise interior sets.

He’ll be back?

Arnold Schwartzenegger is 61 years old p1lus he has a new job, so the odds of him making a return apperance in Terminator Salvation aren’t that great… as a matter of fact, that rumor was shot down, but could a voice-over from The Governator be on the horizon?

According to Wired magazine, they haven’t ruled out the idea:

Arnold Schwarzenegger will not appear on screen in Terminator: Salvation, but the film’s producer, Moritz Borman, got cagey when asked if the Governator might make his presence known via voiceover.Borman, who produced all three previous Terminator movies, told Wired.com: “Schwarzenegger is governing California. He will not be, as a person, in the film.”

“As a person” opens the door to some kind of voiceover, right?

“I’m not going to answer the question about what we’re trying, or what we want, or what we’re toying with,” said Borman. “It’s really up to what fits in the film or not. Maybe his voice, or maybe not.  It’s really not settled.

I just hope that one way or another this gets resolved pretty quickly… that whole William Shatner situation with the new Star Trek movie got to be an annoyance, and once the movie is released it will probably surface again. You don’t want to give any plot points away or anything, but hopefully there won’t be a feud between the filmmakers and a star who wants back in.

The Day the Earth got lectured?

Just a couple of weeks ago they released the first trailer for the new remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Even if Jennifer Connelly doesn’t actually say “Klaatu barada nikto” during the trailer, it still looks pretty impressive. It would appear that Klaatu isn’t content with just making the Earth stand still in this version, he has to knock a few things down too. And that’s the reason that I have a hard time getting excited about the latest in Hollywood’s massive conga line of remakes.

In the original story Klaatu stopped by Earth because we were beginning to take the first steps in space travel, and our “neighbors” were worried about us bringing our arguments to their front door instead of keeping them on Earth. Exactly what about that story is unique to the 1950’s and needs to be updated?

In 1951 the space race was almost ten years away from heating up, with the Soviet Union and US racing to get to the Moon. In 2008, China and the US are getting ready to start a whole new space race… doesn’t the original story have just as much meaning now?

Well you would think so… but director Scott Derrickson feels like you need a lecture. So this time around Klaatu is coming to tell you that we all need to stop driving our SUV’s and save the environment.

So will this new brand of “Obama on your shoulder” movie do any better than the Iraq war movies that have been bombing for a few years now?

My guess is no.

But I’ll still go, just to see Gort.

Blogging the Terminator

I’m sure this is a pretty common trend these days, but of course I first noted it with the geeky sci-fi flick The Mummy 3… some filmmakers are opting for staggering amounts of security to prevent spoilers from leaking out to fanboys in their parents basements. On the other hand there are others, like Rob Cohen on The Mummy that are actually blogging the whole process. Latest on that list is McG, the director of Terminator 4… which is already filming.

He’s even posted a couple of minor spoilers:

This movie takes place several years after Judgment Day, but prior to 2029. Just like it took a long time to get an HD plasma screen in our world, it took Skynet a lot of research and development to get to the T-800, and this movie explores that “space between.” We have all been fascinated with the world after Judgment Day. Here it is.

In this film, there are Hydrobots that patrol the water, Transports that move human prisoners around, Harvesters that collect human beings as lab rats for Skynet and Aerostats that survey all that is going on with the resistance the world over.

A Hydrobot sounds like something a Transformer would play with in their bathtub, but other then that, it’s looking pretty promising.

One other interesting plot note from the blog is the fact that they filmed a scene at the Griffith Observatory. If I’m not mistaken, that’s where Ahhnold ran into a very blue-haired Bill Paxton in the original movie.

Oh, and Anton Yelchin will be playing Kyle Reese, who I assume will actually be younger than his son in this movie…

Watching so you don’t have to… part II

Let me just say this, if you were planning on watching the A&E remake of The Andromeda Strain… don’t. Just don’t. Go ahead and erase it from your DVR now.
It may actually give The Mist a run for it’s money as the worst movie ever made.

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey over at HotAir has posted an in-depth review of the less-than-stellar flick. He hated it as well.

DC won’t stand still

They just starting filming, but the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still already has two strikes against it. First they cast Keanu Reaves as Klaatu and now comes news that the movie won’t be in DC:

Twentieth Century Fox has begun filming its remake of the 1951 classic “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”

Keanu Reeves, who plays (what else?) a humanoid alien, stars along with Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bates in the sci-fi tale of visitors from outer space who encourage the human race to shape up.

So given that the original contains one of Washington’s iconic celluloid scenes — a flying saucer settling down on the Ellipse — we’ll surely be seeing Keanu & Co. here in D.C., right?

Wrong. Sources with knowledge of the production say that while some exteriors will be shot here, most filming will take place in Canada, because the city didn’t have the right ‘look’ for this version.

You would think that Keanu alone would be enough to doom the flick, but their other casting choices have been pretty solid. Jennifer Connelly will play Helen, and Kathy Bates will be taking the role previously played by Aunt Bee. I also noticed that Aaron Douglas has been cast as well… maybe he’ll play Gort, since he does after all have experience playing a Cylon.
