Happy Halloween!

It wouldn’t be Halloween without the War of the Worlds broadcast…

On October 30, 1938, The Mercury Theatre, a young drama troupe under the direction of Orson Welles, performed a radio play called “War of the Worlds” on WABC, New York, and over the Columbia Broadcasting System network, coast-to-coast.

It was based on a science fiction story by H.G. Wells (no relation) which entailed Martians landing in New Jersey to take over the world. The broadcasted imagery produced through sound effects and acting was so powerful, it caused mass hysteria. Thousands of listeners panicked nationwide, not realizing it was just a radio play, even though disclaimers were announced before and during the production.

X Minus One: Castaways – 09/15/1956

The military is having trouble moving natives off a Pacific island that is going to be used for a bomb test. They say they won’t go because their ancestors were castaways from the bird canoe. The cast includes Karl Weber, Staats Cotsworth, Bob Hastings, Joe Julian, Roger De Koven, Luis Van Rooten, Leon Janney, Stan Early and Reese Taylor. Writer: Ernest Kinoy

X Minus One was a science fiction radio series on NBC that aired April 1955 through January 1958. The show featured stories written by some of the big names in 1950’s science fiction like Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, and Issac Asimov.

Apollo 17 – “…our the flag was still there”

By Keith, 30 October, 2009, No Comment

The Lunar Reconnassance Orbiter, currently orbiting the Moon just 50 km off the surface, has taken more shots of the Apollo 17 landing site… and has seen the actual U.S. flag!

(Here is a wider shot of the landing site)

So far all of the landing sites that the LRO has photographed have had tracks around them, and this one has the flag right where it should be. I’d say that lunar landing conspiracy theorists can officially suck it.

h/t to Phil Plait.

Coincidentally, here is Eugene Cernan the Apollo 17 commander and the last man to walk on the Moon on Fox News reacting the NASA’s Ares I-X test flight:

Ares I-X Roars Off the Pad

With more than 12 times the thrust produced by a Boeing 747 jet aircraft, the Constellation Program’s Ares I-X test rocket roars off Launch Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  At left is space shuttle Atlantis, poised on Launch Pad 39A for liftoff in November.

Also, here’s video of the launch, just in case you missed it on Wednesday:
