Thurs. Show Prep – Worthless Sheepskin Edition

  • NY Post: Bad news for academia… The four-year college degree has come to cost too much and prove too little. It’s now a bad deal for the average skull full of mush. Students aren’t learning practical skills, so employers are more impressed with experience. Meaning that even when you get a degree you have to take a basic entry-level job to get that experience. It’s not that much of a surprise. I have a degree in Communications, and for every news writing or web design class there was one about understanding the rhetoric of cuneiform laundry lists from the ancient Hittites. It may have been interesting, but employers weren’t chomping at the bit to hire me because I was up on my Kenneth Burke.
  • CNN: There was economic news aplenty today… The private sector shed about 470,000 jobs in June. Interestingly enough, at the same time pending home sales went up. The good news is that according to Robert Gibbs, President Obama is ready to start taking responsibility for the economy. Truman said “The buck stops here.” Obama says “Wait, I’m not ready… ok…. NOW the buck stops here.”
  • MSNBC: Legislators in more than a half-dozen states including California, which has a deficit big enough to fund a Moon shot, are dealing with how to trim their budget deficits. Why does this seem to be such a foreign concept to these people? Whether your a state or the federal government, you have a pretty good idea of how much money you are going to get in a given year. How can they be running deficits in the billions? Are they as bad at math as I am? Shouldn’t we give some thought to firing all of them?
  • Time: Sarah Palin says that if she ran against President Obama she would win. Gibbs says that he’ll bring up the idea. When he’s not running the economy of course, since we know that it’s ok to give him responsibility for the economy now.
  • The State: Governor Mark Sanford is talking to his brain trust about his political future. I’ll just go on record as saying he should resign… not because of the adultery, that’s between him and his wife. He should leave because no governor should be allowed to just disappear for a week.
  • USA Today: The down economy seems to be forcing people to stay in the cities. This is interesting, since I’m actually planning on making a move to the suburbs. Of course I’m moving to a different city, but that’s a different story.
  • Trib: The “Ledge” in the Skydeck at the Sears Tower is set to open on Thursday. The press had a preview of it today, and Chicago Tribune reporter Kristen Schorsch brought her video camera. Not for the acrophobics in the audience.
