Now that I’m on the long road to Atlanta… I’ve made it most of the way, but I’m staying with my family in Huntsville for a few days before I had down there this weekend… I’ve been thinking about what I will miss now that I’ve once again left the midwest for a while:
- Midwestern Accents - I have only been back in the southeast for a matter of hours, and already I have been deluged with “y’alls” and “fixin-to’s”.
- Milwaukee Brewer fans - I think the Brewers and Cubs have a rivalry that’s already one of the better ones in the National League, and I think it’s only going to get better over the next few years. It was certainly a great change to be around people who are as passionate about their team as I am. I’ll definitely miss that in Atlanta.
- Working with Dan and Nicole - Having to wake up before Willard Scott every day is a big disruption to your life, and it’s just not worth it if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. Dan and Nicole are two very funny and talented people, and it’s a shame that we only got to work together for two years
- “The Cheddarsphere” - I’ve already been scanning the web and there doesn’t seem to be anything remotely comparable to impressive blog network in Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general. Obviously I’ll be keeping tabs on what’s going on up in Milwaukee, places like Dailytakes, Real Debate Wisconsin, Badgerblogger and yes even Pete Republic have become a part my daily routine. Still, it will be different watching these from afar.
- Chicago - I know that people in Milwaukee don’t like being compared to Chicago very much… and rightly so, Milwaukee is a great town on it’s own. However, I have to say that one of the things that drew me to the job in Milwaukee was it’s close proximity to Chicago. Even though I’ve spent a huge chuck of my life elsewhere, I always have and always will consider myself a Chicagoan, and being so close made me feel like I was making progress in getting back home to the Windy City. I still believe that I will get back there eventually… hopefully sooner rather than later… but I have to say it does make me a little sad that I can’t jump on the train and go down there at a moments notice. This job in Atlanta is actually a promotion over Milwaukee, but the fact that I’ll be moving so far away from “home” makes it kind of a sad one.
I also certainly met a lot of great people over my two years in Milwaukee… more than I could ever hope to list here, and I’ll certainly miss them as well, although I’m sure I’ll be staying in touch with most of them. Maybe we’ll all meet again when I make it back home to Chicago.

If I ever spout off the phrase “fixin’ to”, then I know it’s time to be put out to pasture
Well, shucks, Keith, I’m plain out gosh darned ‘barrased that you seen fit to mention lil ole me in this here blog of yours
All kidding aside….pleasure was all mine to get to at least meet you once….and the beauty of the WWW is that we’ll still get to visit one another’s page and share BSG notes…..
I really wish all the best in your new digs…..
Pete, you forgot the most important piece of southern speak… remember that you can say whatever you want about someone, as long as you add the words “bless your heart” at the end.
Example: “George you’re dumber than salt, bless your heart” or “Hillary Clinton is a skanky, straw-haired socialist pig… bless her heart”
See…when I went to Alabama to the Talladega race a few years ago….I failed to immerse myself in the culture…that’s my problem
Next time I’ll remember
OK, first of all there’s nothing wrong with “yall” and “fixin’ to”…and not all of us say “Bless your Heart”. Second, I don’t think Willard Scott sleeps, that’s part of his deal to live forever the he and Satan made. Finally, there’s a lot of great things in the south ya know. We have Zaxby’s, warmer weather, sweet tea, and Me! And you have family down here!! Duh!! Geez!…Perk up Mister!
