Big boots to fill

Owen Garriott had quite an eventful career… in 1965 he was one of the six Scientist-Astronauts selected by NASA. He’d have to wait a while for his first space flight, the Skylab 3 mission in 1973, but they set a new world record for duration of approximately 60 days, more than double the previous record. He will soon have another honor to add to his resume: Father-Astronaut.

His son, Richard Garriott, a noted computer game developer and vice-chairman of Space Adventures has been announced as the latest space tourist. Like many of the space tourists, he’ll be keeping a blog about his experience.

As an Apollo-era astronaut, I wonder what Owen thinks about his son rocketing into space in a Soyuz capsule… I guess that’s how the son of a US astronaut would rebel.
